Quotes and Notes

"Strange things are afoot at the circle K."

--Bill and Ted's Excellent Adventure

"She turned me into a newt!"

"But you're not a newt now."

"It got better."

--Monty Python's Life of Brian

Cohen v. California 1970--

This case set a precedent for free speech. A nineteen-year-old, Paul Cohen, wore a jacket that said "FUCK THE DRAFT. STOP THE WAR." The court ruled, in a 5 to 4 decision in Cohen's favor, and effectively protected two elements of speech: the emotive and the cognitive. There was no evidence that the words would provoke substantial numbers of people into some kind of phyiscal action. Justice John Marshall Harlan said, "One man's vulgarity is another's lyric."

[while we studied this in my COMM 411 class, I obtained this verbatim information from oyez.org 11/11/10]

"The happiness of your life depends upon the quality of your thoughts: therefore, guard accordingly, and take care that you entertain no notions unsuitable to virtue and reasonable nature." Marcus Aurelius

"Whoever yields to temptation debases himself with a debasement from which he can never rise. A man can be wronged and live; but the unrestricted, unchecked impulse to do wrong is the first and second death." Horace Mann

"True courage is not the brutal force of vulgar heroes, but the firm resolve of virtue and reason." Alfred North Whitehead

"The way of a superior man is threefold: virtuous, he is free from anxieties; wise, he is free from perplexities; bold, he is free from fear." Confucius

"To see what is right, and not do it, is want of courage, or of principle." Confucius

"Keep true, never be ashamed of doing right; decide on what you think is right, and stick to it." George Eliot
(FYI: George Eliot was the pen name of a woman, Mary Anne Evans 1819-1880, who was an English novelist.)

"It is not a merit to tolerate, but rather a crime to be intolerant." Percy Bysshe Shelley
(FYI: Percy was the husband of Mary Shelley who wrote Frankenstein)

"A mother should give her children a superabundance of enthusiasm, that after they have lost all they are sure to lose on mixing with the world, enough may still remain to prompt and support them through great actions." Julius C. Hare
